The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has made a strong call for the elimination of all forms of stigma, discrimination, and harmful practices associated with menstruation.
Speaking, during the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration in Awka ,Mrs Soludo described menstruation as a natural biological process that should be embraced with dignity rather than shrouded in shame or taboo.
She expressed concern over the silent suffering of many girls across communities due to lack of proper hygiene education, inadequate access to sanitary materials, and outdated cultural beliefs that lead to isolation and mockery.
Mrs Soludo advocated better welfare for women and girls and stressed the importance of replacing shame with knowledge, silence with open education, and exclusion with support and compassion.
She noted that every girl deserves to go through her monthly cycle with confidence and pride.
The Governor’s wife revealed that sanitary pad banks have been established in over 350 schools across Anambra State, with more than 25,000 packs of sanitary pads already distributed to girls.
She appealed to parents, school authorities, religious leaders, communities, and partners to sustain the campaign and provide enabling environments for girls during menstruation.
The event brought together stakeholders, educators, and students committed to advancing menstrual hygiene and dignity for the girl child.
Radio Nigeria Correspondent Uche Ndeke reports that highpoint of the event was the distribution of sanitary pads to all the girls from various schools as well as the women present .
