A bill to amend the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024 has been passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly.
It was aimed at strengthening the legal framework guiding local government administration in the area.
The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze,who presided over the plenary in Awka where the Executive Bill scaled first, second and third readings commended members for their commitment in ensuring the passage of the bill.
The bill was presented by the Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Jude Akpua of Njikoka Two Constituency and seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Johnbosco Akaegbobi, representing Nnewi South Two Constituency.
The amendment specifically revises Section 101 of the Principal Law, introducing a new provision and re-numbering subsequent sections.
Under the new provision, legal representation of local governments in court proceedings will primarily be undertaken by lawyers from the State Ministry of Justice, as assigned by the Attorney General.
It also allows local governments, subject to the Attorney General’s approval, to engage private legal practitioners when necessary.
The House later adjourned till Thursday this week.
