As the rainy season intensifies across parts of the country, motorists have been urged to ensure their vehicles are in good safety condition before taking to the roads.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, gave the advice in an interview with Radio Nigeria Correspondent, in Awka.
Corps Commander Asekhauno warned that roads become increasingly slippery during rainfall, making careful driving essential.
She expressed concern over the continued use of worn-out tyres by some drivers, noting that such tyres lose proper grip on the road.
According to Corps Commander Asekhuno, this reduces effective contact with the road surface, causing vehicles to skid or veer off when brakes are applied.
She further emphasized the need for motorists to reduce speed during rainfall, stressing that even lthough the recommended speed limit is 100 kilometres per hour, drivers must slow down significantly when roads are wet.
The Anambra State FRSC boss also highlighted the importance of functional windscreen wipers, advising drivers to ensure both the wipers and water reservoirs were in proper working condition to maintain clear visibility.
She equally encouraged drivers to carry out routine vehicle checks before driving, regularly checking their tyres, oil levels, and water.
Corps Commander Asekhauno urged motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and to pull over safely when rainfall becomes too heavy and visibility was poor.
She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on Nigerian roads, especially during the challenging rainy season.
