The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra Sector Command, has carried
out a joint road safety audit at the notorious Agulu Lake black spot in Anocha local government area,, following a disturbing series of road crashes that claimed eleven lives within the past month.

Leading the operation was the Anambra Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, who described the recent tragedies as unacceptable and
preventable.

The audit comes after four consecutive crashes at the same location, raising urgent
concerns about both driver behavior and structural deficiencies in the road design.

The assessment team was made up of officials from the Anambra State Road Traffic Maintenance Agency, the Anambra State Ministry of Works, members of the Anocha Local Government Area,
members of the state House of Assembly, as well as community leaders.

During the inspection, the Sector Commander strongly condemned reckless driving practices while also pointing to design flaws along the stretch of the
road bordering Agulu
Lake.

The team identified critical areas requiring infrastructure upgrades and recommended the installation of temporary barricades as an interim safety measure.

In a swift response, the Director of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority ordered the immediate deployment of road furniture to the affected area, and installation work commenced without delay.

Honourable Nkechi Ogbuefi, member, representing Anocha in the State House of Assembly, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents of her commitment to working closely with the state government to redesign the road and the surrounding lake axis to improve safety conditions.

Additionally, a representative of the Commissioner for Works reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the agreed safety measures.

They included barricading vulnerable sections of the road and installing rumble strips to alert drivers and reduce speed.

Community leaders at the scene commended the proactive steps
taken by the FRSC and other agencies, commending the road safety corps for its prompt emergency response efforts and continued dedication to safeguarding lives on Anambra roads.

Authorities say the coordinated intervention marks a critical step toward
restoring safety at the Agulu Lake axis and preventing further tragedies.
