With just few days to the three years in office of the present Administration has the foundation towards actualizing their campaign promises to the electorate been met?
In today’s Human rights Correspondent Juliet Anatuanya takes a look at the citizens right to good governance and quality representation.
Governance is a process of managing a nation’s affair. It could be good or bad, depending largely on how its programmes and policies impact on lives of the citizens and the nation.
Quality leadership on its own involves initiation of development ideas and policies as well as effective implementation of same in a way that would be beneficial to greater number of the led.
It comprises transparency, accountability and responsiveness in carrying out political, social and economic activities of a nation.
Good governance ensures that the voices of the voiceless are heard, while the interest of the vulnerable in the society are protected in the distribution of the nations resources.
With barely few days for the present administration in local, state and federal levels to clock two years since assumption of duty, electorates have been looking forward to the actualization of the campaign promises made to them, as some respondents in Enugu Metropolis react.
Speakings on the expectations of those given the mandate to represent the people in government, a Youth Development expert and Human rights Activist Mr. Onyedika Agbo explained that political leadership in the country fell short of expectations.
Mr. Agbo emphasized the need for people to hold government accountable through an organized platform and the ability to know their rights.
What then does the law say about the need for quality, effective representation and good governance?
A Human rights lawyer, Dr. Tony Ngene said though it is not justiciable but the people can withdraw their mandate through their votes.
It is therefore necessary for those who have assumed public offices to prove their worth and retain the confidence of the people.
