The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr Somtochukwu Udeze, has called on governments at all levels, parents and well-meaning Nigerians to prioritize the future, protection and overall well-being of children as they celebrate this year’s Children’s Day.
In a goodwill message to mark the celebration, Dr Udeze reassures the people of the state that the Anambra State Legislature would continue to give adequate attention to issues affecting children through laws and policies aimed at protecting and promoting their rights.
The Speaker notes that children remain the foundation of a better society and therefore deserve proper care, quality education, security and moral upbringing to enable them realize their full potential.
Dr Udeze reveals that the Anambra State House of Assembly was the first legislative institution in Nigeria to pass the Child’s Rights Bill in two thousand and five, which was subsequently signed into law in Two Thousand and Six.
He appeals to states yet to enact or fully implement the Child’s Rights Law to do so in the interest of Nigerian children and the future of the nation.
The Speaker further urges parents and guardians to instill discipline and proper values in their children, while creating peaceful and stable homes capable of nurturing responsible future leaders.
He also advised children to remain focused on their education and avoid acts capable of destroying their future and aspirations.
Dr Udeze commends the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, for his efforts towards improving the welfare and future of children in the state, especially through the free education policy which, according to him, has increased access to quality and affordable education for Anambra children.
The Speaker equally calls on public spirited individuals and organizations to support government efforts aimed at improving the living conditions and opportunities available to children across the state.
