Mothers have been encouraged to draw strength from God and remain steadfast in their responsibilities of nurturing families and shaping the moral foundation of future generations.

The wife of the Bishop on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Doctor Nonyelum Nwokolo, made the call in a message to mark the 2026 Mothering Sunday as mothers in the Anglican Communion celebrate the occasion.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria correspondent, Oby Arinze in Onitsha, Doctor Nwokolo described Mothering Sunday as a sacred reminder that motherhood goes beyond biological responsibility, noting that it is a divine calling entrusted to women by God.

She explained that a mother’s love reflects the compassion of God and urged mothers to see themselves as builders of generations whose sacrifices are recognized by God even when they are unnoticed by the world.

Doctor Nwokolo also highlighted some of the challenges confronting mothers in contemporary society, including economic pressures, parenting in the digital age, and the difficulty of balancing career demands with family responsibilities.

She added that many mothers silently battle emotional and mental stress such as anxiety, loneliness, and exhaustion.

According to her, the church plays a vital role in supporting families by providing strong support systems within the congregation, offering marriage counselling programmes, providing spiritual mentorship for mothers, and encouraging family prayer.

Mama Niger further advised mothers to be intentional in raising children with strong moral values by modelling the behaviour they expect from them and maintaining open and honest communication within the family.

She also encouraged mothers who may feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of motherhood to seek support from family members, fellow mothers, and the church community, reminding them that God always provides the grace needed to fulfil every calling.

Doctor Nonyelum Nwokolo, however,
advised young women preparing for marriage and family life to cultivate a strong relationship with God and appreciate the importance of communication and partnership in building a stable home.
