A 25-year-old female student has been found dead in Onitsha on Thursday 18th June 2026 in a circumstance suggestive of suicide.
A note suspected to be a suicide message was found at the scene of the incident.
The note reveals a disturbing account of a broken relationship after the deceased allegedly had three abortions for a yet-to-be-identified man named Chigozie.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Mr. Ikoye Orutugu, while reacting to the tragic death, expressed worry over the rising cases of moral decadence and social vices in the society.
The Commissioner of Police described the trend as a collective challenge that demands urgent attention and intervention from the government, parents, guardians, community and religious leaders as well as other stakeholders.
Mr. Orutugu said that while investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances that led to the incident, it highlights the need for improved parental guidance, strong moral upbringing, and emotional support for young people.
He stressed that parents and guardians must pay closer attention to the emotional well-being, social interactions, and behavioural changes of their children and wards.
According to him, many of the societal challenges people face can be mitigated through effective parenting, open communication, and the inculcation of sound moral values.
Mr. Orutugu called on community leaders, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to intensify advocacy, mentorship programmes, and efforts aimed at promoting positive values, resilience, and responsible living among the youth.
The Commissioner of Police therefore directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a thorough and discreet investigation.
