South-East Governors and other notable Igbo leaders are to storm Abia state for the celebration of the 2026 edition of World Igbo Day this month.
Announcing this to Newsmen at the Government House Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, this years edition with the theme; “Njiko Aka”, would provide an opportunity for Ndigbo across the glob to reflect on the unity, identity and collective accomplishments of the Igbo people.
The Commissioner disclosed that the National Board for Technical Education had visited the state to accredit facilities for optometry and nursing training at the College of Nursing Sciences, Federal Medical Center, Umuahia and the Abia State College of Nursing Sciences,Abiriba campus.
Prince Kanu said that the Week 38 Health Advisory focused on diphtheria prevention and control, noting that no case of the disease had been recorded in the state.
According to him, the state’s Public Health Department has instituted an outbreak prevention and preparedness plan.
On technology, Prince Kanu said that preparation for the fourth cohort of the Abia TechRise programme had commenced following approval by the Governor noting that the first three cohorts of the programme produced 2,210 graduates, with 88 outstanding graduates securing automatic employment into the Abia Civil Service.
On agriculture, the commissioner said that the local government agricultural intervention programme was also progressing across the 17 LGAs in the state as the participating councils recently received over 2000 pullets under the ongoing poultry intervention programme.
