Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has granted a pardon to popular native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, under the prerogative of mercy.
Governor Soludo announced the pardon on Friday during a visit to the Correctional Centre in Amawbia, where Nwangwu was serving his prison term.
Nwangwu had earlier been convicted by an Awka High Court following a plea bargain with the state government and was serving an 11-month custodial sentence over offences relating to the practice of “Oke-ite” and other related matters.
The court had also directed that he renounce the practice and take up a role in youth reformation.
Announcing the pardon, Governor Soludo said the exercise was not only about extending mercy to the former native doctor but also about ensuring that the welfare and wellbeing of inmates in the state’s correctional facilities were adequately catered for.
The Governor said Nwangwu had demonstrated signs of reformation and was ready to contribute positively to society.
He explained that the decision was in line with his administration’s emphasis on correction, rehabilitation and the reintegration of repentant individuals into society.
Governor Soludo further announced Nwangwu as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in Anambra State.
He said the new role would enable him to support efforts aimed at discouraging youths from crime, promoting responsible living and encouraging them to embrace productive ventures.
The Governor also visited and inspected the custodial facility at Waterside, Onitsha, as part of the inspection of correctional facilities in the state.
