The reopening of the First Niger Bridge has been delayed by another week following persistent rainfall which has slowed down ongoing maintenance works on the facility.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Mr Timothy Emenike, disclosed this in a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria correspondent.
Mr Emenike explained that rainfall was adversely affecting the construction process, noting that after each heavy rainfall, work is usually delayed for one or two days as the affected areas needs to dry before construction could continue.
He, however, said the contractor is working effectively with equipment and materials adding that workers on the site had being demonstrating the willingness to complete the project.
Mr Emenike appealed to motorists and other commuters to exercise more patience and continue to use the designated alternative routes until the bridge is reopened.
It will be recalled that the First Niger Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic on 7th of this month for a two-week emergency maintenance work which was scheduled to end today, 21st September 2026.
