Abia state government says it is determined to address the perennial flooding challenges ravaging the Obohia Road area in Aba, the economic nerve centre of the state.
Governor Alex Otti who stated this l during an inspection of the Obohia Road Project, explained that the reconstruction would include the construction of drainage channels to redirect storm water from Obohia Road, Port Harcourt Road and adjoining areas into the Aba River.
Governor Otti said the measure aimed at preventing flood water from flowing into a nearby borrow pit that had become an environmental hazard, especially during the rainy season.
According to the Governor, the project when completed, the borrow pit will no longer be useful and the government would reclaim the land for productive use
Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti has frowned at the use of roadsides for trading activities and warned that the government would no longer tolerate trading on major roads in the state.
The Governor who gave the warning during roads projects inspection in Aba pledged to reconstruct the popular Afor Ule Market in the area within one year to provide a more conducive environment for traders.
