Fathers have been urged to lead their families with godly values, discipline, integrity and unwavering commitment to the service of God, as these remain the greatest inheritance they can leave for their children.
The Bishop on the Niger( Anglican Communion ) the Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo, gave the advice in his message to mark the 2026 Father’s Sunday celebration at All Saints’ Cathedral, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Bishop Nwokolo described fathers as gifts from God through whom leadership, love and discipline are expressed in families, noting that fatherhood is not merely a title but a sacred responsibility and divine calling.
According to him, in a society faced with moral uncertainty, economic challenges and social instability, godly fathers have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of their children and society by exemplifying faith, wisdom, discipline and righteousness.
The Bishop charged fathers in the Diocese on the Niger to emulate the biblical example of Joshua by standing firm in their faith and declaring that their households would serve the Lord, despite prevailing societal pressures and growing idolatrous tendencies.
While acknowledging the economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and rising cost of living confronting many families, Bishop Nwokolo encouraged fathers not to lose hope, assuring them that God remains faithful and will provide the wisdom, strength and resources needed to fulfil their responsibilities.
He further urged fathers to deepen their relationship with God through regular family devotions and active participation in church activities, stressing that spiritual leadership remains a vital aspect of fatherhood.
The Bishop reminded fathers that God, the Heavenly Father, remains the ultimate example of fatherhood through His unconditional love, faithful provision, wise discipline and constant presence, and prayed that all fathers would become faithful stewards of their homes, courageous defenders of truth and unwavering witnesses of God’s grace.
