The Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Okey Ezeobi, has summoned contractors handling road projects across the state to explain recurring cases of road failures and take urgent corrective measures.
Speaking at a meeting with the contractors, the Commissioner expressed concern over videos circulating on social media showing failed road sections, describing the development as embarrassing to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the engineering profession and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
Mr Ezeobi directed the contractors to conduct a comprehensive inventory of all roads constructed since the present administration assumed office, inspect their current condition and promptly repair any defective sections. He noted the government’s promise of a 20-year guarantee on its roads and stressed that motorists deserve smooth, safe and seamless driving experiences.
On drainage structures, Mr Ezeobi warned that failed sections would be removed and reconstructed, noting that arrangements in which contractors subcontract drainage works to concerns about conflict of interest and the need for independent supervision.
In his contribution, one of the Project Engineers , Mr Charles Akpan, urged the Ministry to design critical drainage sections as doubly reinforced structures and provide adequate propping to prevent reinforcement collapse during construction.
Also one of the contractors, Mr Fadi Azam stressed that maintenance after handover is critical, adding that once a project is completed and handed over, it becomes the responsibility of the road owner to ensure consistent maintenance, keep drains clear and keep the entire road system functional.
Correspondent Uche Ndeke reports that the Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to stricter quality control and professional standards, directing the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Martin Agbili, to formally write all contractors to submit lists of their completed roads for urgent inspection and repairs.
