In line with the ongoing reform in the Education sector in Abia State, the state has handed over the Abia state University campus at Osisioma to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic for it permanent site.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this while briefing journalists at the Government House on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that handing over the campus to the Polytechnic was for its expansion to accommodate more students stressing that the Polytechnic recently matriculated 5,100 students.
According to the Commissioner, Governor, Alex Otti will this week, handover the three newly completed hostels projects he initiated at the Abia State University, Uturu and on the same day would also inaugurate five more projects to improve the infrastructural standard of the institution.
The Commissioner further announced resolved of the state government to install speed breakers on major roads across the cities in the state with the aim of curbing the rising cases of over-speeding and road accidents.
He explained that the decision followed concerns that the ongoing construction and reconstruction of roads, particularly in Umuahia, had unconsciously encouraged excessive speeding by motorists, thereby endangering lives.
Prince Kanu also disclosed that significant progress has been recorded at the Afara Relief Market project site, where construction of perimeter fencing had been completed and compensation paid to affected landowners as part of efforts for the relocation of traders at Isigate.
