The Federal Government has commenced emergency intervention works on sections of the Second Niger Bridge corridor affected by erosion.
The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made the disclosure during an inspection of the Obosi Bypass section of the corridor.
Senator Umahi was accompanied by officials of the Federal Ministry of Works,, as well as some Personnel of Anambra and Delta States
Ministries of Works.
The Minister attributed the heavy flood causing erosion to climate change, stressing that about three sections of the road embankment leading to the main bridge had been washed away.
He commended the contractor handling the project for responding immediately without waiting for payment, describing the swift action as a demonstration of effective partnership between government and contractors.
The Minister directed the construction of additional drainage channels at the affected points, reinforcing of the washed-out sections with stone pitching, and concrete, and strengthening of the base of the embankments to prevent further erosion.
Senator Umahi stressed that the government’s priority remained the restoration and protection of the road infrastructure to avert a recurrence of the damage.
Correspondent Uche Ndeke reports that the minister also directed officials of the Federal Ministry of Works to begin palliative works towards the restoration of the First Niger Bridge.
