The Enugu East Local Government Council has taken a major step toward urban and economic development with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ibagwa Nike Autonomous Community for the development of Iyioku City, formerly known as Freedom City Layout.

The landmark agreement, signed at Nkwo Nike, the council’s headquarters, establishes a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework aimed at transforming the area into a modern urban hub.

The project also include the construction of Okwe Market, residential estates, and other critical infrastructure designed to attract investors and boost economic activities within Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Chairman, Enugu-East Local Government Council, Pastor Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, described the initiative as a bold move,which aligns with the development vision of the state government.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Mbah for providing an enabling environment that supports grassroots development and public-private collaborations.

Pastor Obi-Anike described decent housing as one the basic necessities of man hence the commitment of his administration to the provision of decent and affordable housing to the people

In his remarks, the traditional ruler of Ibagwa Nike, His Royal Highness, Igwe Emmanuel Ugwu, commended the council’s leadership and perseverance in bringing the MOU to fruition.

He noted that the project would open up the community, create jobs, and improve the standard of living of residents.

Representatives of prospective investors, including professional and institutional bodies hailed the partnership as a “dream come true,” describing Iyioku City as a choice destination for sustainable investment and development.

The Iyioku City development is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic growth, urban renewal, and increase internally generated revenue for Enugu East Local Government Area and Enugu State at Large, reinforcing the council’s commitment to inclusive development and community-driven progress.
