The long-awaited modernisation of the Onitsha Main Market reconstruction work has commenced in full swing.
This marks the beginning of a major urban renewal project embarked by the Anambra State government aimed at transforming one of West Africa’s largest commercial centres into a modern trading hub.
A visit to the market this morning by Radio Nigeria Correspondent, Oby Arinze, shows that contractors had mobilised to the site, with work progressing steadily as traders adjusted to the ongoing development.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria, a trader, Mr. Victor Egwu, described the project as a welcome development, noting that although every meaningful development comes with temporary inconveniences, the long-term benefits would outweigh the challenges.
Another trader, Mr. John Ifeaku, commended the initiative but observed that the project would have been more convenient if it had commenced during the dry season, allowing affected traders enough time to secure alternative spaces for displaying their goods.
Also speaking, Mr. Malachy Ugwuanyi and Mrs. Anastasia Obiaku expressed optimism that the modernisation project would improve the aesthetic trading environment and attract more customers to the market upon completion.
The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Mr Chijioke Okpalugo, described the commencement of the project as the beginning of a new era for the market.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would further consolidate the market’s status as a leading commercial destination in West Africa.
The Commissioner for Housing, Mr Henry Arinze, had few days ago, led a delegation of government officials to formally hand over the project drawings to the lead contractor and engaged market stakeholders on the scope and implementation of the project.
According to the Commissioner, the project is in line with the vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to transform the market with modern infrastructure, including a stable electricity supply, designated waste disposal facilities, a water fountain, food court, car parks, bus stops, and other amenities designed to enhance a befitting business environment.
Mr Arinze assured traders that construction activities would be carried out with minimal disruption to business, explaining that most of the work would take place after the close of trading each day.
He added that adequate lightning and security measures had been put in place by the state government in collaboration with the market leadership to safeguard lives, shops, and goods throughout the construction period.
