The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has confirmed the recovery of the body of the child who was reported missing following the unfortunate flood incident along the Awka-Nibo-Nise-Enugu-Ukwu Ring Road.
In a Press Statement, the Mayor expressed profound sadness over the loss and conveyed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased child.
He further confirmed that the other eight children and two adults rescued from the incident are currently receiving medical attention and responding to treatment.
Prince Okafor commended the youths of Isiagu Community for their courage, prompt intervention and commitment during the rescue operation and also acknowledged the gallantry
The Mayor noted that the response to the incident demonstrated the importance of community cooperation, particularly during emergencies, and appreciated all individuals and groups who contributed to the rescue efforts.
While reiterating the commitment of the Awka South Local Government Administration to the safety and welfare of residents, the Mayor urged members of the public to exercise maximum caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
He particularly advised motorists, school children, parents, commuters and residents to avoid flood-prone roads, waterways and other potentially hazardous locations whenever there is heavy rainfall.
The Mayor in the release further appealed to residents not to undertake unnecessary journeys or expose themselves and their loved ones to avoidable risks during flooding.
