The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, has advocated policy initiatives that uplift the poor and create a more egalitarian society as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a goodwill message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Reverend Emma Madu, to mark the occasion, Mr Udeze congratulated Nigerians for remaining united as a socio-political entity despite numerous challenges.
He expressed satisfaction with the successful entrenchment of democracy as a system of government and the country’s role in defending democratic ideals across Africa.
Mr Udeze called on the masses to draw strength from the nation’s history, confront present realities with courage and unity of purpose, and contribute their quota towards continuous growth and sustainable development.
He appreciated the gallantry of Nigeria’s founding fathers and noted that Independence Day provides a veritable opportunity for citizens to reflect on the free state of the country and the brave efforts of those who fought for freedom and rights, irrespective of religious, political or ethnic differences.
The Speaker urged those in leadership positions to initiate progressive, innovative and problem-solving policies, programmes and projects.
He equally enjoined the masses to give maximum patriotic support to such initiatives while demanding accountability, transparency and sincerity from their leaders.
Mr Udeze also praised Nigeria’s legislative institutions for providing quality legislation that continues to shape democracy, the rule of law, and the principles of growth and development.
He prayed for God’s intervention in the affairs of the nation, asking for guidance for both leaders and followers so that enduring peace and unity may thrive.
