The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has urged motorists and other road users to exercise extra caution while driving during the rainy season to prevent road traffic crashes.
The Sector Commander, Imo State Sector Command, Mrs. Nimota Okoro, gave the advice while speaking to Radio Nigeria in Owerri.
Mrs. Okoro noted that the rainy season is particularly prone to road traffic crashes due to poor visibility, adverse weather conditions and slippery roads.
She therefore urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, particularly their tyres, windscreen wipers and braking systems, before embarking on any journey.
“My advice to the motoring public is for everybody to be cautious. Give way when you are supposed to give way. Know that you are not the only person on that road, other motoring public are there with you competing with the small space. The pedestrians are there, the cyclists. You have to be a defensive driver. For the pedestrians, look left, look right, look left again before you cross the road”
The FRSC Sector Commander stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging motorists not to leave their safety in the hands of other road users but to make personal safety a priority at all times.
“Passengers, caution your driver if you see your driver overspending, call number 122 for rescue, because that driver is going to kill you. If you see something, you say something”.
Mrs. Okoro disclosed that the command has intensified its operational activities, including the rescue of crash victims, sensitisation and education of motorists on road safety measures, as well as increased patrols across the state.
She expressed optimism that sustained enforcement, public enlightenment and cooperation among road users would help reduce road traffic crashes by fifty percent by 2030, in line with the national road safety benchmark.
