Motorists have been advised to adopt safe driving habits as the rainy season intensifies to reduce the risk of road traffic crashes associated with wet weather conditions.
The Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps, Commander Bridget Asekhanuo who gave the advice in Awka, noted that rainfall reduces visibility, makes road surfaces slippery, and increases the likelihood of crashes if motorists fail to observe necessary safety precautions.
Corps Commander Asekhanuo urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey by cleaning vehicle windows and windshields and inspecting vital safety components, including headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, windscreen wipers, and wiper blades to ensure they are in good working condition.
She also advised motorists to switch on their vehicle lights whenever it rains, irrespective of the time of day, to improve visibility for other road users.
The Sector Commander further urged drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and apply what she described as the “common sense speed limit” based on prevailing weather and road conditions.
To strengthen compliance with safety regulations during the rainy season, Corps Commander Asekhanuo directed all Unit Commanders in the state to intensify traffic calming operations, sustain public enlightenment campaigns, and pay closer attention to the condition of vehicle windscreen wipers during patrols and enforcement activities.
She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to reducing road traffic crashes in Anambra State and appealed to all road users to cooperate with the FRSC by driving responsibly and obeying all traffic regulations.
Corps Commander Asekhanuo reminded motorists that “Drive to Stay Alive” remains the watchword for safe motoring.
