Anambra State Government has resolved to intensify efforts towards environmental protection, road safety, and improved public order as part of deepen good governance.
These are parts of the decisions taken at this week’s meeting of the State Executive Council at the Light House, Awka.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed that the Council approved stiffer penalties for traffic offences.
According to him, the government will approach the Anambra State House of Assembly to amend the extant traffic law in state.
He said offences such as driving against oncoming traffic and cutting across dual carriageways to beat U-turn distances will now attract very heavy fines and mandatory Mental Status Examination..
Dr. Mefor explained that the measure is aimed at curbing recklessness and safeguarding lives on the state’s roads.
On governance and public discourse, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to open and accountable leadership, welcoming fair and constructive criticism from the public.
The council condemned the rising trend of fabrications and falsehoods on social media, describing the acts as criminal defamation.
The Commissioner advised public servants whose reputation is injured by such malicious publications to seek legal redress, while cautioning content creators to draw a clear line between legitimate criticism and criminal fabrication.
The Council also reiterated the determination of the state government to continue its crackdown on fake native doctors, fake pastors, and other fraudulent elements operating in the state.
