The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to declare an emergency Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Programme for communities ravaged by insecurity across the state.
The lawmakers made the call during plenary following a motion sponsored by the member representing Ihiala Constituency 2, Mr Golden Illo.
The proposed programme aims to rebuild damaged infrastructure, restore educational and healthcare services, revive economic activities, facilitate the return of displaced persons, and fast-track healing and development in the affected areas.
Mr Iloh highlighted the extensive destruction of public facilities in several communities in Ihiala, Ogbaru, Orumba South, Nnewi South, Awka North, Aguata, Ayamelum, and Orumba North Local Government Areas.
He noted that while Governor Soludo’s proactive security measures have largely restored peace and normalcy in many areas, numerous schools, hospitals, maternity centres, roads, and other critical infrastructure remain damaged or non-functional.
Supporting the motion, the member representing Idemili South, Mr Ebuka Igwe, the member representing Newi South constituency, Mr Nonso Atuchukwu , Mr Emma Nwafor representing Orumba South and the Majority Leader Mr Ikenna Ofodeme
emphasised the need for urgent government intervention to restore a sense of belonging.
The law makers stressed that the protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of government and recommended comprehensive assessment of damaged infrastructure in collaboration with security agencies.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the plenary commended described the motion as timely before reading out the resolution of the House.
