The Anambra State House of Assembly has intensified calls for justice in the alleged torture of a ten-year-old boy, Chiziterem, directing relevant authorities to ensure that all those connected with the incident face the full weight of the law.
The resolution was reached during plenary following concerns raised by the member representing Onitsha North Constituency One, Mrs Ifeoma Azikiwe, over the disturbing circumstances surrounding the child’s ordeal.
Mrs Azikiwe told lawmakers that the victim was reportedly handed over to a family acquaintance earlier in the year with the expectation of receiving care and formal education.
She, however, alleged that the arrangement turned tragic as the child was subjected to repeated acts of cruelty, leaving him with severe physical injuries and emotional trauma.
The lawmaker urged the state government, through the Ministry of Women and Social Development and other relevant agencies, to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of all persons involved in accordance with existing child protection laws.
Contributors to the debate, including the Majority Leader, Mr Ikenna Ofodeme, and the member representing Anambra East Constituency, Mr Obi Nweke, condemned the incident and advocated a transparent judicial process.
They maintained that the gravity of the allegations warrants serious criminal charges if established by investigators.
Also speaking, Mr Golden Iloh of Ihiala Constituency Two and Mr Tony Muobike of Aguata Constituency Two called for a wider investigation to determine whether other individuals may have aided or concealed the abuse.
Ruling on the matter, the Speaker of the House, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, described the incident as a painful reminder of the need to strengthen child protection mechanisms across the state.
He disclosed that he had personally visited the victim and stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and welfare of every child.
The Speaker subsequently directed the House Committee on Judiciary to commence an immediate review of relevant child protection legislation, while urging social welfare departments in the twenty-one local government areas to be more vigilant in identifying and responding to cases of child abuse.
The House also advocated stronger community reporting structures and support systems aimed at preventing similar incidents and protecting vulnerable children across Anambra State.
