The Abia State Government has announced plans to develop a comprehensive Industrial Policy aimed at accelerating industrial growth, attracting investments, and consolidating the economic reforms already achieved in the state.
Briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, after this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the proposed policy is a product of the strategic and massive transformation being carried out by the present administration.
According to the Commissioner, reforms already implemented by the government have strengthened the state’s local economy, improved the Ease of Doing Business, and positioned Abia as an attractive destination for both local and foreign investors.
Prince Kanu disclosed that the State Government has constituted a committee to drive the drafting of the Industrial Policy, adding that the document would be launched soon.
Urban Addressing and Infrastructure Programme
The Commissioner also announced the commencement of a comprehensive addressing infrastructure programme, which includes street naming, house numbering, and geo-referenced addressing across the state. He explained that the initiative aligns with the State’s Urban Renewal Programme.
He noted that the project would be implemented through the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), and the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA).
Electric Bus Scheme
On transportation, Prince Kanu said the pilot phase of the State’s Electric Bus Scheme is running smoothly, with residents currently enjoying free rides.
He revealed that 77,774 residents have so far benefited from the free electric bus services since the pilot rollout began in December 2025.
