The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA has advised parents and motorists to always consider their safety before embarking on any journey during rain falls.
The Head of Operations NEMA Office, Enugu Zone Mrs Priscilla Madukwe made the call shortly after visiting Anambra state to inspect flood incidents and water levels in the area.
The visit by the team was to evaluate the level of damage done so far by the persistent rainfall that has caused building collapse, loss of lives as well as damage to property worth millions of naira in some parts of the state.
Mrs Madukwe who described the flood incident at ring road Nibo involving school Children as heartbreaking, cautioned parents and motorists to always allow flood waters to rescind before taking their wards to school or embarking on a journey.
She noted that the water level at the Nigeria Inland Waterways, base at river Niger Onitsha was increasing , hence the need for people living in the riverine areas to be at alert and ready to move to higher grounds whenever need be.
The NEMA head of Operations, Enugu Zone, also visited Ogbaru local government headquarters, Atani, where she inspected the designated holding camps and other flood prone spots in the area.
In an interview, the Coordinator of Anambra State Local Emergency Management Committee, Mr Nnamdi Esmai said some farmers were already harvesting their crops as the flood continue to submerge farmlands.
He appealed to both the federal and Anambra state government to ensure that adequate arrangements are made for the evacuation of people whenever they are told to move to higher grounds.
