Some stakeholders from Anambra State have encouraged the citizens to participate actively in Saturday’s Governorship election in the area.
One of them who is the Director General, Standards Organization of Nigeria, SON, Doctor Ifeanyichukwu Okeke, stressed the importance of elections in democratic governance.
Doctor Okeke, while speaking with Radio Nigeria at Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area, noted that the participation of the electorate would ensure the emergence of credible leaders.
He decried the apathy and poor participation in previous elections in the area and tasked the citizens to come out in great numbers at the polling units across the state during the polls.
According to the Director General of SON, the participation of the electorate would deter those who wanted to manipulate the results from engaging in such acts.
He underscored the need for all stakeholders to engage in massive grassroots mobilization of the electorate to promote the growth of democracy in the state.
Another stakeholder, Mr Nnamdi Okoye, insisted that the masses should take the ownership of the electoral process by ensuring active participation in elections.
Mr Okoye said democratic governance cannot thrive without the citizens, hence the need for them to be part of the processes to entrench enduring democracy in the country.
A stakeholder from Amawbia, Chief Ikechukwu Chukwuemeka said he engaged in educating the people at the grassroots on the need to be part of the electoral activities.
Chief Chukwuemeka was hopeful that the engagement with the voters would help traders, students and public servants to come out and vote for the candidates of their choice.
Correspondent Nkiru Egwui reports that the stakeholders are engaging with the electorate to sensitize them and help reduce apathy associated with past elections in the state.
