The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure Inspects Ongoing Erosion Control Project at Umugama, Ire Village, Abba in Njikoka Local Government Area
The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has expressed serious concern over observed challenges in parts of the ongoing construction of drainage channel for erosion control project at Umugama, Ire Village, Abba, in Njikoka Local Government Area.
The committee in a thorough on-the-spot assessment, said the inspection was aimed at assessing the level of work done and ensuring that the project is executed strictly according to the government approved specifications.
The committee went round the project site, examining different sections of the ongoing work.
During the visit, the committee observed some areas of concern in the drainage construction and directed the contractor handling the project to immediately address the identified defects and ensure that the necessary corrections are made within the shortest possible time.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Emma Nwafor stressed the need for quality delivery on the project noting that the erosion control project was critical to the safety and wellbeing of residents who had suffered the devastating effects of erosion for decades.
Mr. Nwafor urged the contractor to speed up the work while maintaining the required standards adding that the Anambra State House of Assembly would continue to monitor the work closely to ensure value for money and full compliance with specifications.
The Deputy Majority Leader and Member representing Njikoka Constituency 2, Mr. Jude Akpu, said the Umugama erosion site had, over the years, caused severe damage to homes, farmlands, and infrastructure.
He explained that the project includes a major road linking Njikoka and Dunukofia constituencies, thereby affecting movement and economic activities in the area.
Responding to the observations and directives, the contractor, Mr. Gozie Igwe, assured the committee that the cracks noticed in some portiond would be promptly addressed while pledging to meet the required standards and specifications.
