Legacy University Okija in Anambra state have received approval from the National Universities Commission, NUC to run four new courses leading to the award of Bachelor degrees.
The newly approved courses are Artificial Intelligence,Telecommunications Science, Intelligence, Security Studies and Medicine and Surgery.
The Vice Chancellor of Legacy University Okija, Professor Ezechikel Ihionu made this known during the 10th Matriculation ceremony of the university.
Radio Nigeria Correspondent Uche Ndeke reports that apart from the newly approved courses Legacy University has secured accreditation for all the courses offered by the institution.
The oath of alligance to the University was administered on the matriculating students by the Registrar, Doctor Peace Onukelobi who also advised them to avoid cult related activities.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ezechiel Ihionu expressed the hope that qualified security personnel within and outside Nigeria as well as other individuals interested in security studies would avail themselves of the opportunity provided by the approval of degree course in Intelligence and Security Studies by the NUC in the University to update their knowledge on modern security skills and operations.
He noted that the newly approved Programmes in Legacy University reinforced the primary goal of establishing the institution, noting that the school was committed to the training and raising of young people to become distinguished academicians, successful professionals, technocrats and entrepreneurs.
Professor Ihionu admonished the new students to apply themselves strictly to their studies by being serious with their class theoretical and practical works as well as other academic activities lined up by the University for them in order to excel in life.
The Pro Chancellor and Proprietor of the University, Doctor Leonard Nkameme said that the school had embarked on the expansion of its physical and human infrastructure including the installation of a high speed internet service to support the newly approved courses and consolidate on its achievements.
Doctor Nkameme while appreciating the Anambra state government for providing a conducive and secured environment for teaching and learning in the University, called on cooperate organizations, philanthropists and government agencies to assist the university to keep producing reliable graduates for Nigeria.
In a sermon during the mass that preceded the matriculation ,Rev Father Anthony Edoka of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Ihiala
urged the new students to always remember to appreciate the huge sacrifices made by their parents in sending them to school.
Father Edoka stressed that success in life is not built on intelligence alone, but on faith, humility, discipline and total dependence on God.
In a remark the representative of the National Universities Commission, NUC Alhaji Babangida Aliyu commended the passion, zeal, and determination of the Pro Chancellor of Legacy University to ensure that the students acquire sound education as well as the promotion of the comfort of staff.
The Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Moses Chimdi observed that the determination and doggedness of the University ‘s management has yielded the positive results including the high number of courses accredited in the school which will impact positively on Nigeria quest for quality manpower.
Speaking on behalf of the host Community, Okija, Chief Ben Eze cautioned that any student found engaging in secret cult activities would not be spared as the stakeholders were making effort to ensure that the area remained peaceful and secured.
