Abia State Government says it is considering alternative public transportation options to ease the impact of the restriction on the operation of motorcycle in three major towns of the state .
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, stated this while briefing Newsmen at Government House on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Ott.
Prince Kanu warned that violators of the restriction order will face a penalty of N50,000 and possible forfeiture of their motorcycles if they fail to claim them after thirty days.
According to Prince Kanu, all motorcycles operating in the major towns in the state whether for private or courier service purposes, must now be registered under the state’s expanded Vehicle Enumeration Programme.
The Commissioner further stated that the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue would maintain a database of all registered motorcycles, while operators would be issued with colour-coded reflective jackets and identification codes for easy identification.
Also speaking the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (RTD), said that intelligence and security assessments revealed that criminal elements had increasingly exploited motorcycles to perpetrate criminal activities across the state.
