The Anambra State Government has demolished the remaining part of a three-storey building under construction that collapsed at Umuoma village in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The demolition was supervised by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Chijioke Ojukwu.
The Commissioner attributed the collapse to bypassing official processes by the developer, resulting in substandard construction.
He explained that the building was oversized for the land, with clear violations of setback regulations and other planning standards.
The Commissioner announced plans to strengthen state building laws by criminalizing construction without proper permits in the State.
Mr Ojukwu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to urban renewal projects which will include the establishment of a central bus terminal, recreational centre, and fruit market in Nnewi, alongside completion of the abandoned shopping mall in the area.
He expressed confidence that similar attention would soon be extended to Onitsha with plans for a central bus terminal, Onitsha Mall, and regeneration of the Main Market before the end of the year.
On the ongoing Operation Zero Shanties, the commissioner maintained that it is aimed at promoting compliance with building laws and enhancing urban regeneration. noting that the initiative would make cities neater, and healthier for residents.
