Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State says work will soon start on the modernisation of Onitsha Main Market.
Governor Soludo Governor Chukwuma Soludo gave the indication during a meeting with Leaders of major markets in Anambra State, at Government House, Awka.
He said trade and commerce remain one of the largest drivers of Anambra’s economy, saying that markets on the upgrade list would also receive facelifts in phases.
Governor Soludo directed that all markets in the state operate from Monday to Saturday and remain closed only on Sundays and designated federal and state public holidays.
He warned that no market was permitted to comply with directives from non-state actors, stating that anyone who does so would face the full weight of government action.
Governor Soludo while urging traders to obey law and order, also called on the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Tochukwu Nweke, to highlight key provisions of the new Anambra Trade and Market Law.
According to him, the law outlines the structure of market leadership, operational guidelines, and opening hours for markets designated as areas of economic interest.
