The Anambra State Police Command’s Operatives of the IGP’s Violent Crime Response Unit, Awkuzu says it has recovered sophisticated arms, and explosive devices in a criminal camp located at Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South Local Government Area.
The Operatives acted on credible information from a 37-year old suspect already in custody, Mr Nnamdi Nkemdilim alleged to be one of the top commanders of the proscribed successionist group.
Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement discloses that the exhibits included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with about 2000 rounds of live chain ammunition, two fabricated rocket launchers with 25 propellers, ten locally made Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), One locally made Beretta pistol, two pump-action guns, three hand grenades among others.
According to the statement, the camp was earlier destroyed by a Joint Security Team.
Before confession by the suspect, intelligence was received overtime on how some escaped gang members were attempting to regroup but met a great resistance and destruction in the camp from the operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit following a gun duel against the unrepentant members.
It equally says some of the armed suspects also fled the scene, with varying degrees of bullet injuries in the process.
Further information reveals that the suspect admitted involvement in several violent attacks within Anambra State, including attacks on Police facilities, the killing of security personnel comprising Police, Military, and Civil Defense Officers, attacks on government facilities, and the murder of security operatives on stop-and-search duties on various roads within the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu noted that with the creation of the Violent Crime Response Unit, the Command Operatives are now more disposed and motivated to sustaining the offensive operations against all criminal elements threatening the peace and security of the State.
