Women have been advised to play more active role in community development and political participation as they gathered for the 2026 Anambra Women’s Summit to mark the International Women’s Day.

Speaking at the event, the Wife of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Doctor Nonye Soludo, described women as intelligent, resilient and trustworthy, noting that anything placed on the hands of woman were handled with dedication and responsibility.

According to Doctor Soludo, the message of the summit was simple but powerful: “when women rise, society rises” with the theme: Empower Her, Elevate All”.

She highlighted the commitment of the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo in creating opportunities for women, based on competence, rather than gender, noting that empowering women remains central to the government’s development agenda.

In her remarks, the APGA Women Leader in the state, Mrs. Esther Onyekezi, appreciated contributors to the success of the event and reaffirmed the women’s support for the Soludo’s administration.

She noted that empowering women remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen families and communities.

She disclosed that widows, non-indigenes and other women across the 21 Local Government Areas, were randomly selected for the first phase of the government’s empowerment programme.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr Chukwudi Oli who described women as pillar of all families, said that women were the foundation of families and the society.

Also speaking, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, said the summit aimed to equip women with knowledge and skills for self-reliance and leadership.

Chief Onunkwo urged participants to demonstrate good character and remain supportive of the administration in the state.

Radio Nigeria correspondent Nkiru Egwui reports that the colourful event featured a march past by women from the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

Ogbaru Local Government Area clinched the first position, followed by Awka North in second place and Idemili North in third.

Winners were rewarded with cash prizes and gift items as well as presentations of sewing machines and grinding machines to other women.
