The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Police Command, Mr. Danladi Isa, wants parents, guardians and school authorities
to ensure the security of their children, wards and pupils by having a clear plan for who takes them to and brings them back from school.
The Commissioner of Police sounded the warning in a press release on the recent rescue of three children who were abducted in Abia State while returning from School and subsequently trafficked to Ebonyi State where they were sold to three different people.
Mr. Isa advised School authorities to educate their pupils and students on security tips during their routine morning Assemblies and properly verify and interview any persons coming to pick them up after school.
He also urged the public to promptly report any suspicious persons, activities or any security challenges to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency contacts.
According to the press release made available by the Command’s spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, the children have been reunited with their parents while six suspects involved in the crime, namely Onyinyechi Christopher, Female, aged 25 years, Ogechi Chidi, Female, 31 years,
Chukwu Bernadette, Female, 67 years,
Nnaji Patience, Female, 49 years,
Abraham Ibiam, Male, 57 years, and
Felix Ikechukwu, Male, 54 years, were apprehended.
Giving further details on the incident, the Command explained that On the 30th of last month, a report was received at Owerrinta Police Divisional Headquarters that on the same date, a father who had taken his three children, two boys and a girl, to school later went to pick them up, only to be informed that the children had gone home. Upon returning home, he could not find them.
Leveraging on actionable intelligence, detectives of the Command apprehended Onyinyechi Christopher and Ogechi Chidi, who investigations revealed, had lured them with biscuits and promised them soft drinks if they followed them, and took the kids to Bernadette Chukwu who in turn transported them to Ebonyi State and sold them to Patience Nnaji, Felix Ikechukwu and Abraham Ibiam.
The release added that the suspects have already been charged to court.
