Four persons were said to have been shot dead when suspected cultists opened fire indiscriminately at a popular Afor Nawfia Market along the Onitsha–Awka Old Road in Anambra State

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State , Tochukwu Ikenga, the assailants arrived in a black Lexus Jeep with an unknown registration number and immediately began shooting at traders and shoppers before fleeing the scene.

The attack came barely four days after operatives of the Command’s Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), Enugwu-Ukwu, acting on intelligence, arrested two notorious cult members and recovered a firearm from them in the area.

According to the statement, the arrested suspects who are currently in custody, had reportedly provided information that helped the police disrupt a planned rival cult clash in the area.

Despite the earlier arrests, remnants of the gang carried out the deadly attack same day.

The statement says the Command is already acting on credible information to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice while reaffirming the Command’s commitment to eradicating cultism and all forms of violent crime in Anambra State.
