On the occasion of this year’s World Town Planning Day, the National President,Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, Dr Ogbonna Chime has reminded Nigerians including government at all levels, that Planning is key to livable cities and towns.
Dr Chime noted that the country stands at a critical point in its urban development as while it’s towns and cities were expanding rapidly, many of them grow without planning.
This he noted had consequences seen in traffic congestion, flooding, housing shortages,poor Sanitation and uncoordinated land use.
Dr Chime emphasized that the theme of this year’s celebration which is,” With Planning, we can”, speaks directly to the country’s realities and aspiration, highlighting the need the need to protect the environment and build communities where children can thrive.
The National President, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners called for the Implementation of the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Law, with its domestication and enforcement in every state of the country as the legislation provides the framework for orderly physical development.
