The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has described education as a fundamental right that should never be denied to any individual, calling for collective commitment to making education a top priority in society.
Dr. Soludo made the call in Awka while marking the 2026 International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24 following its proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.
The global celebration, which highlights the role of education in promoting peace and development, has the theme “The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education.”
According to the Governor’s wife, achieving inclusive, equitable and quality education should not be seen as the responsibility of government alone, stressing that every segment of society has a role to play in driving meaningful and sustainable change.
She noted that in Anambra State, education is viewed beyond the confines of the classroom, as the Soludo-led administration understands that the quality of education provided today directly shapes the kind of future envisioned for the state.
Dr. Soludo disclosed that the state government has introduced 15 new entrepreneurial subjects into the Junior Secondary School curriculum to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance and future employment.
She explained that the subjects were designed to align learning with current labour market demands and represent a deliberate effort to prepare young people for the future.
The subjects include solar installation, garment making, GSM repairs, agriculture and agro-processing, plumbing, tiling, POP installation and event management.
Others are bakery, hairstyling and make-up, interior design, CCTV and intercom installation, digital literacy, information technology and robotics.
While noting that skills acquisition is a key driver of human capital development in a rapidly changing global environment, Dr. Soludo said the commemoration of the International Day of Education should serve as a moment for renewed commitment.
She emphasized the need to build an education system that places learning as a top priority and nurtures it as a dream attainable by every child in Anambra State.
