Governor Alex Otti of Abia state has approved the immediate renovations and upgrading of the Nigeria’s most notable Civil War heritage sites in the state.

The sites are the historic Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum all in Umuahia the state capital.

Briefing newsmen at the Government House Umuahia after this week’s Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu said Governor Otti resolved to give the approval following agreements between the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and the State government.

Prince Kanu said the initiative which was the brainchild of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy reflects the present administration’s commitment to preserve the State’s history and the revitalization of its vast tourism potential.

According to the Commissioner the rehabilitation of these facilities will create jobs and business opportunities for the residents.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative, Mr Mattew Ekwuribe explained that the renovations of the Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum were delayed because the state government was seeking approval from the Federal Government.

Mr Ekwuribe gave an assurance that the State is working closely with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy to conclude the necessary Memorandum of Agreements before starting the renovations.
