Abia state has emerged first in the 2025 Primary Health Leadership Challenge and ranked sixth performing state in Nigeria.
The state also received award of five thousand dollars from UNICEF, Global Fund, and Aliko Dangote Foundation following its outstanding performance in the healthcare sector.
Briefing Newsmen after this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti at the Government House Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu said the rewards were validation of the transformative strides of the present administration in the state.
Prince Kanu explained that the state government in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives in North America would carried out the free medical services at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.
According to the Commissioner, the state government is set to commence the second phase of renovation and equipping of 946 Primary Health Care centres across the state.
Contributing the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche said apart from Lagos state, Abia now ranked the number one state in the whole nation in terms of the health preparedness indexbabd attributed the success to the 15% budget to the health sector.
Professor Uche who made a case for healthy lifestyle advised the residents especially the drivers to drink responsibly as most road accidents were caused by excessive intake of alcohol.
