Victims of the recently collapsed billboard in Aba that claimed the life of a keke operator have received compensation worth over 20 Million naire from the Abia State Government.
Handing over bank cheques to the victims at the Government House, Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti said the state government in collaboration with the owners of the billboard worked out some modalities to cushion to the effects of damages sustained during the unfortunate incident and the irreplaceable loss of a tricyle operator.
The Governor who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Transportation, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe thanked the Governor for approving the compensation, as well as sponsoring the burial of the keke operator that died during the incident.
Hw urged the family and relatives of the deceased not to tamper with the compensation given to the wife of the deceased, insisting that the money is for opening of business and training of the children.
Also speaking, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSSAA), Mrs. Victoria Onwubiko said the agency and the Ministry of Transport engaged the owners of the affected billboards to ensure the compensation.
The widow of the deceased, Mrs. Chioma Destiny thanked Governor Alex Otti for giving her a huge sum of ₦9.6 million and pledged to make judicious use the money as well as training her children.
Government House Correspondent Peace Agbo reports that 9 persons including the wife of the deceased benefitted from compensation of the ugly collapse of billboard near Salad Market Aba in May this year.
