The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has advised residents of riverine communities in Anambra State to vigilant and be prepared to relocate to higher grounds should the water level of River Niger rise beyond limit.
The Head Enugu Operations , NEMA Office, Mrs Priscilla Madukwe, gave the advice after a visit to the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, to monitor the water gauge.
Mrs Madukwe said the water level is gradually rising but is still the safe limit.
She explained that NEMA, in collaboration with the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, inspected the water level of River Niger as part of efforts to assess the prevailing flood risk in the area.
Mrs Madukwe said the information would help strengthen preparation and enable the authorities to take timely action in the event of possible flooding in riverine communities.
