Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has issued a strong warning on the environment, identifying flooding and gully erosion as the state’s primary existential threats.
He gave the warning while addressing traditional rulers at the Government House Awka.
Governor Soludo pointed out that the weather projections show Anambra among states at high risk of severe flooding, making the situation urgent.
The Governor observed that the state is experiencing rapid loss of land mass due to gully erosion, a menace affecting nearly every community.
He attributed much of the environmental damage to human activities, including channeling runoff water directly onto roads and the deliberate dumping of waste into drainage systems.
These actions, he said, destroy asphalted roads and worsen flooding. The indiscriminate mining of sand was also identified as a major factor accelerating erosion by destabilizing the terrain.
Governor Soludo called for a state of emergency on the urgent desilting of drainages and the immediate cessation of indiscriminate sand mining while utging the traditional rulers to champion environmental protection.
