The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Anambra Stat has cautioned residents of the state against the dumping of wastes materials in waterways.
Speaking at the State Command Headquarters in Awka, on behalf of the State Commandant , Maku Olatunde, the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, Edwin Okadigbo, described the habit of blocking drainages as highly dangerous and completely avoidable.
He noted that heavy rains usually come with higher risks of flooding, building collapse, erosion, and other environmental hazards.
The Commandant explained that some incidents of flooding are preventable if residents adopt responsible waste disposal habits and comply with safety guidelines.
He urged residents, especially those in riverine and flood-prone areas, to regularly clear drainages around their homes and business premises, avoid constructing on waterways, and refrain from any activity that impedes the free flow of water.
The Commandant also called on citizens in low-lying communities to remain vigilant and be ready to relocate to higher grounds should be water levels begin to rise.
