Enugu — Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as part of a broader coalition aimed at achieving national unity and prosperity.
Mr. Obi made the declaration at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, noting that he had been part of the coalition since its inception. The ceremony attracted political stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) from the South East and other parts of the country.
The event was chaired by elder statesman and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chief Simon Okeke.
Also in attendance was the National Chairman of ADC, Senator David Mark, who led members of the party’s National Working Committee, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Tony Nwoye, Senator Victor Umeh, and former National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.
Other dignitaries present included Senator Ben Obi; former Governor of Imo State and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha; former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu; former Governor of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Professor Osita Ogbu; Professor Pat Utomi; and former National Chairman of the APC, Chief Okey Nwosu.
Members of the House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and former Senator Gil Nnaji, who recently joined the ADC, were also in attendance.
In his declaration speech titled “It Is Now Time for National Unity and Prosperity,” Mr. Obi decried the high level of poverty in Nigeria despite the country’s abundant human and material resources. He expressed readiness to collaborate with like-minded and well-meaning Nigerians to lead a movement for a new Nigeria where true independence and prosperity would become a reality.
